Welcome to ElderFriends!
ElderFriends, Inc. offers a program model for volunteer-based friendly visitation.
The ElderFriends program is designed to relieve isolation and loneliness among elders
who wish to live in their own homes and remain independent for as long as possible.
This model was successfully implemented previously in Seattle (1996) and in Richmond
(2006) by founding president, Kiersten Ware. Mrs. Ware's work earned it the NACO
2007 "Acts of Caring" award, the Commonwealth Council on Aging 2007 "Best Practices"
award in the category of Senior Safety, and "Best New Organization" award in 2000.
Our work meets a growing need in an age segregated society as well as growing numbers
of elders who would likely be served by such program models. Isolated, homebound
elders who participate in friendly visitor programs average 80 years of age, while
estimated growth for those aged 85 is the fastest growing age demographic. That
particular age demographic is expected to grow 5 times the rate of the rest of the
population by 2020.
ElderFriends works on the premise that networks of isolated older adults who are
still living independently can be expanded and strengthened by properly trained
and supported volunteer visitors. Such community support helps low-income older
adults living alone to maintain physical and mental health and to remain living
independently as long as possible. Engaging trained and supported volunteers to
develop friendships with those who are isolated and in need of companionship will
strengthen our families and our community.
Does your organization or community want to explore implementing this best practices
model? Let us help you assess your community's capacity and determine the needs
and benefits of establishing a local program. We are here to help.
